FACTS:
Infections of HPV of the mouth and throat can cause 70% of oral cancers in the US, oropharyngeal cancers.
HPV (human papillomavirus) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States.
The number of people infected with Oral HPV has increased over the past 30 years.
According to the CDC, 10% of men and 3.6% of women have Oral HPV.
Specimen collection is as easy as obtaining an oropharyngeal (throat) swab placed in a viral collection media.
Patients who test positive for any of the high-risk types should be followed up in accordance with professional medical guidelines, results from prior screening, medical history and other risk factors.
