Dr. Ronald Blum Reflects on Pandemic’s Lessons in Clinical Lab Products Magazine
Ronald Blum, Ph.D., Vice President of Science & Technology at OmniPathology, is one of the industry experts cited in the feature article, “The COVID-19 Pandemic: Five Years On,” in Clinical Lab Products magazine. The experts review the pandemic’s biggest surprises and key lessons for the clinical lab industry, and they discuss the evolution of diagnostic testing over the past five years.
In the article, Blum points out that the pandemic changed public attitudes toward home testing and sample self-collection, opening the door to more direct-to-consumer (DTC) testing options. He also discusses the evolving regulatory landscape in the post-pandemic era.
In his final remarks, Blum praises the results-driven innovations of clinical labs. “I think the biggest lesson learned from the pandemic is the incredible ability we have as an industry to rapidly address critical problems, develop real solutions, and implement them quickly,” he says. “The resourcefulness of small independent labs to be nimble and creative in their approach was amazing. It was because of the independent labs and their expertise in test development, validation, and analysis, that we were able to [implement] accurate and reproducible COVID testing so quickly and on such a massive scale.”
